KOPN signed on March 3, 1973, founded by volunteers associated with the alternative newspaper The Issue. KOPN's call letters stand for "open." KOPN started with ten watts of power, with a transmitter in the Paquin Tower apartments and a studio above a downtown food cooperative. In 1975, KOPN increased power to 40kw. In 1979, KOPN briefly signed on a television translator on channel 56, but it soon went off the air, later returning as K56AU, a repeater of TBN. In the 1990s, KOPN downgraded to 36kw. Today KOPN carries some NPR programming not carried by KBIA.
